# DigitalOcean Spaces CDN Review: Speed, Pricing and Limits

 Vadym Borovskyi Oct 19, 2026, 9:03:39 AM

![](https://blog.blazingcdn.com/hubfs/Gemini-Blog/image-Oct-19-2026-07-01-07-1036-AM.jpeg)

DigitalOcean CDN (Spaces CDN) is included in the $5 per month Spaces subscription. According to DigitalOcean list pricing as of 2026, that subscription includes 250 GiB of storage and 1 TiB of outbound transfer, and additional transfer costs $0.01 per GiB. This review covers the pricing table, the hard limits, App Platform setup steps, and a workload decision matrix against Amazon CloudFront and Cloudflare. Evaluated October 2026, with competitor list prices as checked August 2026.

DigitalOcean Spaces CDN is one of the cheapest ways to serve static assets from a single-region origin under roughly 10 TB a month, because the CDN layer carries no separate fee. It has no volume discount, so delivery cost scales linearly at about $10 per TB. It also caches only Spaces buckets, which matters more than raw latency once traffic grows.

> **Verdict.** Pick DigitalOcean Spaces CDN if you already run on DigitalOcean, serve under about 10 TB a month, and your users are mostly in North America and Europe. Pick Cloudflare if you need edge logic, a WAF, or a flat-rate plan that ignores egress. Pick Amazon CloudFront if your origin lives in AWS and you need fine-grained cache behaviors. Above 25 TB a month, compare per-TB pricing from a volume-tiered CDN before committing.

## **How the DigitalOcean CDN works with Spaces**

Spaces is S3-compatible object storage. Enabling the CDN on a bucket creates a pull-through edge endpoint of the form BUCKET.REGION.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com. That endpoint pulls from the bucket on a miss and serves from the edge on a hit. The origin is always that one bucket in that one region, so you cannot point the CDN at a Droplet, a load balancer or another provider's storage.

Cache lifetime comes from two places. The first is a bucket-level edge TTL in the control panel, selectable from 1 minute to 1 week. The second is the Cache-Control metadata set on each object at upload. Custom subdomains get a managed Let's Encrypt certificate when the domain's DNS is hosted on DigitalOcean. Otherwise you upload your own certificate and renew it yourself.

### Spaces CDN performance: what to expect

DigitalOcean does not publish per-region latency figures for Spaces CDN. The old benchmark figures circulating for it cannot be verified, so treat any precise TTFB claim with suspicion. The shape of performance is predictable from the architecture, though. On a cache hit, TTFB from a well-served metro typically falls in the 20 to 60 ms range, as it does for any mainstream CDN.

On a miss, the request travels back to the bucket's region. A user in Singapore pulling an uncached object from a NYC3 bucket adds a transpacific round trip, typically 200 ms or more (estimate based on great-circle RTT). This is why cache-hit ratio, not edge count, decides real-world speed on Spaces CDN. Long TTLs, immutable fingerprinted filenames and a bucket region close to your largest audience matter more than anything else you can tune.

## **DigitalOcean Spaces CDN pricing in 2026**

| Spaces line item (list pricing, 2026) | Price |
| --- | --- |
| Base subscription | $5 per month |
| Included storage | 250 GiB |
| Included outbound transfer | 1 TiB |
| Additional storage | $0.02 per GiB per month |
| Additional outbound transfer | $0.01 per GiB (about $10 per TB) |
| CDN layer, requests, TLS | No separate charge |

The only meaningful variable is outbound transfer, and it never gets cheaper per TB as volume grows.

### Worked cost model at three volumes

This model uses 1 TB ≈ 1,000 GiB for readability, so treat every result as an estimate. At 5 TB a month the bill is $5 plus about 4,000 GiB of overage at $0.01, which comes to roughly $45. At 100 TB the bill is $5 plus about 99,000 GiB, roughly $995. At 200 TB it is roughly $1,995. The effective rate converges on $10 per TB, which is excellent at 5 TB and uncompetitive at 100 TB against volume-tiered CDNs.

For comparison, BlazingCDN costs $415 at 100 TB and $765 at 200 TB as of October 2026. It uses progressive tiers from $5 per TB down to $2.50 per TB at volume, with one rate for the US, Europe and Asia and no request fees. Current rates are on the [**BlazingCDN CDN pricing page**](https://blazingcdn.com/pricing/). Below about 46 TB a month the picture flips: Spaces, Cloudflare's flat plans and Amazon CloudFront Business ($200 for 50 TB) can all cost less than BlazingCDN's $25 monthly minimum and metered rate.

## **DigitalOcean CDN vs Cloudflare and Amazon CloudFront**

DigitalOcean CDN is a storage add-on, Cloudflare is a reverse-proxy platform, and Amazon CloudFront is a configurable CDN tied to AWS. Choose Spaces CDN for cheap delivery from a Spaces bucket. Choose Cloudflare when you need edge compute, a WAF or flat pricing in front of any origin. Choose CloudFront for AWS origins and per-path cache behaviors.

| Vendor | Cost at 5 TB per month | Billing model | Origins | Purge and rules |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| DigitalOcean Spaces CDN | About $45 (estimate) | $5 base plus $0.01 per GiB, no volume tiers | Spaces buckets only | Path-based purge, one TTL per bucket, no edge logic |
| Cloudflare | $0 to $250 per month on self-serve plans | Flat plans (Pro $25, Business $250); Enterprise quote-based, widely reported near $5,000 | Any HTTP origin | URL, prefix and tag purge by plan, cache rules, Workers |
| Amazon CloudFront | About $340 pay as you go after the 1 TB free tier (estimate, US and Europe rates, 2026), or $200 on the Business flat plan | Per-GB regional pricing plus request fees, or flat-rate plans | Any HTTP origin, native S3 | Path and wildcard invalidations, per-path cache behaviors, edge functions |

At 5 TB, Spaces CDN wins on price only if your origin is already a Spaces bucket. Once you need any other origin or edge logic, the comparison stops being about price.

**DigitalOcean Spaces CDN:** its strength is zero-configuration delivery bundled with storage. Its limitation is that the origin, the region and the billing rate are all fixed. **Cloudflare:** its strength is platform breadth, from security to edge compute. Its limitation is that media-heavy delivery on self-serve plans is governed by its terms of service, so read them before pushing video through Pro. A detailed breakdown is in the [**BlazingCDN vs Cloudflare comparison**](https://blazingcdn.com/vs/cloudflare/). **Amazon CloudFront:** its strength is cache-behavior control and AWS integration. Its limitation is pay-as-you-go cost at volume: $6,965 for transfer alone at 100 TB, per published price lists checked August 2026.

## **Spaces CDN limits that decide production fit**

- **Single origin type:** the CDN caches only its own Spaces bucket, so multi-origin or failover setups need another CDN in front.
- **Per-bucket request rate limit:** Spaces enforces a per-bucket operations-per-second ceiling (vendor documentation lists the current value). Cache misses and API writes count against it, so a cold cache after a full purge can trigger 503 responses.
- **Coarse cache control:** one edge TTL per bucket in the panel. Per-object Cache-Control metadata is the only finer lever, and there are no edge rules, header rewrites or query-string policies.
- **Purge granularity:** path-based only, with no surrogate keys or tag purge.
- **Apex domains:** custom domains are CNAME-based, so an apex needs a DNS provider with CNAME flattening or ALIAS records.
- **Certificates:** automatic Let's Encrypt only when DNS is hosted on DigitalOcean.

The rate limit is the one teams discover in production. Treat a full-bucket purge as a load event, not a routine deploy step.

## **How to set up Spaces CDN with App Platform**

1. Create a Space in the region nearest your largest audience. Misses return there, so region choice is a latency decision.
2. Enable the CDN on the bucket and set the edge TTL to 1 week for fingerprinted assets. Keep mutable files in a separate bucket with a short TTL.
3. Add a custom subdomain such as assets.example.com. Choose a managed Let's Encrypt certificate if DNS is on DigitalOcean, or upload your own.
4. Upload assets with Cache-Control set to public, max-age=31536000, immutable for hashed filenames. Any S3-compatible client or SDK can set this metadata at upload.
5. Generate a Spaces access key pair. Store it in App Platform as encrypted environment variables, scoped to the component that writes assets.
6. Expose the CDN hostname to the app as an environment variable for the asset base URL. Your build then emits absolute asset links to the CDN instead of the app's own route.
7. Deploy, then open a few asset URLs in browser developer tools. Confirm the Age header increases on repeat requests and that responses carry your Cache-Control value.

Serving assets from Spaces rather than from App Platform containers also keeps that transfer off the app's own bandwidth allowance and away from container CPU.

## **App Platform performance and limits**

App Platform builds from buildpacks or Dockerfiles for Go, Node.js, Python, Ruby, PHP and static sites. It scales horizontally by instance count, with CPU-based autoscaling on dedicated-instance plans. New instances need build-cached image pulls and app boot time before taking traffic. Latency-sensitive services should therefore keep a minimum instance count above one instead of relying on scale-from-low.

App Platform fits stateless HTTP services, workers and static frontends. Droplets or DigitalOcean Kubernetes (DOKS) fit better when you need kernel or TCP tuning, private network topologies beyond what App Platform exposes, large single processes, or GPUs. DigitalOcean offers GPU Droplets for that last case, but not GPU components on App Platform.

## **Best fit by workload: decision matrix**

| Workload | Best fit | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Static site or SPA under 1 TB a month | App Platform static site plus Spaces CDN | Fits inside the $5 Spaces allowance |
| Stateless API on DigitalOcean | App Platform with a minimum instance floor | No cluster to operate |
| Site needing WAF, bot rules or edge logic | Cloudflare in front of DigitalOcean | Security and compute features Spaces lacks |
| AWS-hosted origin, complex cache behaviors | Amazon CloudFront | Native integration, per-path policies |
| Video, downloads or game patches above 50 TB a month | Spaces as origin plus a volume-tiered CDN | Linear $10 per TB stops being cheap |
| Long-lived connections, custom networking, GPU | Droplets, GPU Droplets or DOKS | Full control of runtime and network |

Spaces CDN wins on simplicity at low volume, and the right answer changes once monthly egress crosses roughly 25 to 50 TB.

## **FAQ: DigitalOcean CDN and Spaces CDN**

### Is the DigitalOcean CDN free with Spaces?

The DigitalOcean CDN has no separate charge, but it is not free. Edge delivery counts against the Spaces subscription's 1 TiB monthly outbound allowance, which is included in the $5 base price as of 2026. Transfer beyond that costs $0.01 per GiB. Requests and TLS certificates are not billed separately.

### Is DigitalOcean CDN better than Cloudflare?

DigitalOcean CDN is simpler and cheaper for assets already stored in Spaces, while Cloudflare is broader. Cloudflare accepts any origin and adds WAF, edge compute and tag-based purge on higher plans. Spaces CDN offers only bucket-level TTL and path purge. Many teams put Cloudflare in front of DigitalOcean compute and keep Spaces CDN for static files.

### Can DigitalOcean Spaces CDN use a Droplet as its origin?

No. DigitalOcean Spaces CDN only caches content from its own Spaces bucket. To cache responses from a Droplet, App Platform service or load balancer, you need another CDN such as Cloudflare or Amazon CloudFront. Alternatively, publish the content into a Space at deploy time so the Spaces CDN can serve it.

### How do I purge the DigitalOcean Spaces CDN cache?

You purge the DigitalOcean Spaces CDN cache through the control panel or the API, by file path or the entire endpoint. There is no tag or surrogate-key purge. Prefer versioned filenames over purges, because a full purge sends every subsequent request to the bucket and can hit the per-bucket request rate limit.

### When does DigitalOcean Spaces CDN get expensive?

DigitalOcean Spaces CDN gets expensive relative to alternatives above roughly 25 to 50 TB a month, because transfer is billed linearly at about $10 per TB with no volume tiers. By our estimate, 100 TB costs about $995 a month. Volume-tiered CDNs price the same traffic lower, so compare quotes at that scale.

## **Run a Spaces CDN cost and hit-ratio check this week**

Pull last month's Spaces outbound transfer from the billing page and multiply everything above 1 TiB by $0.01 per GiB. Then sample 1,000 asset URLs from your access patterns and record the Age header and TTFB from two regions far from your bucket. If misses dominate the slow tail, fix TTLs and filename hashing first. If the transfer line is growing faster than revenue, price a second CDN with Spaces kept as the origin.

For delivery above 25 TB a month, BlazingCDN offers a 14-day testing period on real production traffic at $5 per TB with the monthly minimum waived. You can [**start a BlazingCDN testing period with Spaces as origin**](https://blazingcdn.com/sign-up-contact-form/) and compare hit ratio and cost side by side.

To cache responses from a Droplet, App Platform service or load balancer, you need another CDN such as Cloudflare or Amazon CloudFront. Alternatively, publish the content into a Space at deploy time so the Spaces CDN can serve it."

Prefer versioned filenames over purges, because a full purge sends every subsequent request to the bucket and can hit the per-bucket request rate limit."

"text" : "DigitalOcean Spaces CDN gets expensive relative to alternatives above roughly 25 to 50 TB a month, because transfer is billed linearly at about $10 per TB with no volume tiers. By our estimate, 100 TB costs about $995 a month. Volume-tiered CDNs price the same traffic lower, so compare quotes at that scale."
